How to Survive Finals Week at BYU: A Cougar's Guide

Finals week at Brigham Young University can feel like a spiritual, mental, and physical endurance test. With exams, projects, and papers piling up, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But fear not! Here’s a guide to help you stay sane, focused, and even a little inspired as you tackle the toughest week of the semester.

1. Create a Game Plan

Start your finals prep with a solid plan. List out all your exams, deadlines, and study goals. Prioritize them based on difficulty and due dates. Use a planner or a digital tool like Google Calendar or Notion to schedule study blocks, breaks, and review sessions.

2. Find Your Study Spot

The Harold B. Lee Library is a classic go-to, but it can get crowded during finals week. Consider alternative spots like:

  • The Joseph F. Smith Building (JFSB) courtyards for a peaceful outdoor vibe

  • The Tanner Building for a more business-like environment

  • Empty classrooms or study lounges in your dorm or apartment complex

  • The basement of the Wilkinson Student Center (WSC) for a quieter, overlooked space

3. Use Campus Resources

BYU offers free tutoring services, study groups, and review sessions. Check with your professors or department for additional resources. If stress is getting to you, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) provides support to help you manage anxiety and burnout.

4. Get Spiritual Fuel

A little spiritual recharge can go a long way. Attend a devotional, listen to uplifting talks, or take a walk around the temple for some peace and clarity. Even a few minutes of scripture study or prayer can provide the calm and motivation you need.

5. Don’t Neglect Sleep and Nutrition

Pulling an all-nighter might seem like a good idea, but a well-rested brain retains information better. Aim for at least six hours of sleep, stay hydrated, and fuel your body with protein-packed snacks like nuts, yogurt, and fruit. The CougarEat and campus vending machines have quick options if you're on the go.

6. Take Breaks and Move Your Body

Studying for hours on end without breaks leads to burnout. Use the Pomodoro Technique (25 minutes of focused work followed by a 5-minute break) or take a walk around campus to refresh your mind. The Smith Fieldhouse and the BYU gym are great places for a quick workout.

7. Remember: You Are More Than Your Grades

Finals are important, but they don’t define you. Do your best, but also trust in the effort you’ve put in throughout the semester. BYU’s mission is about lifelong learning and growth, not just test scores.

You've Got This, Cougars!

With preparation, faith, and self-care, you can survive—and even thrive—during finals week. Good luck, and go crush those exams!
